i don't discriminate when it comes to genres of music. i'll listen to and enjoy just about anything, even stuff that is just plain bad. however, i do lean towards sounds that are more rock, goth, or metal adjacent. i hesitate to use the word 'alternative' because of the more recent connotations attached to the word, but it is a more accurate and succinct way of describing the wide-array of genres and subgenres that compel me to call my favourites.
anyway, below are links to and descriptions of some of those favourites and why i connect with them!
this has been one of, if not my favourite song for years now. i love everythig about it--the experimental rock vibe, the eerie piano, amazing vocals and persephone/hades myth inspired lyrics! this song and the band behind it--nastyona--is one of my biggest motivators for learning korean, and a huge creative inspiration in general.
This is the song that truly got me into goth music and i am eternally greatful for it. dark, gloomy, and intimate, it is the embodiment of everything i love about the genre and the band itself. every time i open my playlist it is sure to be first in the queue.
this song is inseparable from halloween for me. it deserves all ten minutes it takes up and i will gladly die on that hill. i listened to this song the night i got black out drunk for the first time in my life while playing mario kart with friends in my very first apartment. even though i woke up the next morning with vomit all over the place, no pants, and an interview, it still remains a good memory and i dont think any other song could backdrop it the same way.
unlike with music, i actually dont tend to watch very many movies. when i do, it is either just as an excuse to go to the movie theatre (something i enjoy more for the experience of the place than anything), with friends or family, or, it is a horror movie. the one genre i am guaranteed to have seen a lot of. i cant help it, horror is just one of my favourite things in this world. and, as you'll soon notice, my ultimate favourite subgenre of horror is the beautiful science fiction-horror (bonus points if it was made in the 80's or earlier!)
invasion of the body snatchers, 1978
ever since i first watched this movie, it has stuck to my brain like dry glue, unable to peel away. the slow creeping build up and the satisfying pay-off. the horror of everyone around you changing into something else, and the bleak realization that there is nothing you can do, nobody you can trust. the final scene is one of my favourite moments in any movie. i keep trying to get people to watch this movie with me, but some people just arent ready for greatness.
one of the reasons i love horror, and particularly sci-fi horror, is the practical effects. i think thats the reason a lot of people enjoy these sorts of movies. the overuse of cgi in horror movies has been the bane of my move-going experiences and i deeply appreciate movies like the thing that use practical effects so wonderfully. i love isolation in horror, and this movie is isolation. similarly to invasion, the thing deals with trust and the idea that the people around you may not be who they once were. maybe the fact that these are my two favourite movies says something about me. i am electing to ignore that notion, however.
look, i enjoy jeff goldblum, okay? aside from that, the fly feels like the quintessential sci-fi horror flick--the first thing you show someone when you want them to know what its all about. i love the body horror, and of course, the practical effects. its a fun time, and thats really all it needs to be.
welcome to my very lazily coded interests page! so far, there is only music and movies, but i want to add in books, animanga and other things in the future.
*hopefully i will figure out how to add some cool images as well
